About the company

DeepSeek develops large language models such as DeepSeek-V3, R1 and V4 and publishes their weights openly. Liang Wenfeng founded the company on 17 July 2023 as an offshoot of his quantitative hedge fund High-Flyer; it is registered in Gongshu District, Hangzhou. In January 2025 its R1 chatbot overtook ChatGPT as the most downloaded free app on Apple’s US App Store. In May 2026 it reportedly raised 7 billion dollars in its first outside funding round, at a valuation of 52 billion dollars.

Belgium and Europe

Belgium’s federal government banned DeepSeek apps on work devices: civil servants had to remove them by 1 December 2025, after a risk analysis by the Centre for Cybersecurity Belgium. Minister Vanessa Matz issued the circular.
