About the company

Louwailou is a restaurant on Gushan (Solitary Hill) in West Lake serving classic Hangzhou dishes such as West Lake vinegar fish, Longjing shrimp and beggar’s chicken. By tradition, Hong Ruitang, a scholar from Shaoxing, opened it in 1848 at 30 Gushan Road; the present main building dates from the 1980s. Its name, written by the scholar Yu Yue, comes from a Southern Song poem by Lin Sheng. Past guests include Sun Yat-sen, Lu Xun and Zhou Enlai, and it holds the ‘China Time-honoured Brand’ title.
